Horizontal Directional Drilling is a method that allows installation of utility pipes and cables such as water mains, communication cables, sewage pipes, gas pipes, electricity cables and other such services without the time consuming and often very disruptive traditional open cut trench approach.
AK Trenchless’ directional drilling machines are steerable and provide a precise and controlled method of creating the desired bore in which any cables and pipes can later be laid leaving very little disruption to the over ground environment making this method perfect for environmentally sensitive landscapes.
The trenchless directional drilling technique makes a perfect solution to laying cables for example under permanent structures such as railway lines, airport runways, busy motorways, rivers and canals where digging from above ground is out of the question. Using AK Trenchless’ HDD machines to take control of laying pipelines or cables is not only a cost effective primary option but a disturbance free solution.
The machines used by AK Trenchless are capable of installing pipes and cables up to 800mm in diameter and up to 300 metres in length. The Ditchwitch JT3020 all terrain, the latest machine in AK’s fleet, is capable of drilling through solid rock and has proved its worth during projects on the M62 and M1 Motorways.

Auger Boring offers a perfect solution for the installation of clay / concrete pipes, steel casings and plastic ducts when traditional open cut methods are not an option due to environmental, practical or economical reasons.
Auger Boring is also known as Pipe Jacking and creates no disruption to roads, rivers, railway lines, buildings or sensitive surfaces such as golf courses and is not affected by surface obstacles.
This quick, cost effective and dry method (auger boring does not create slurry) is an ideal solution from very small to large jobs to install steel pipes and clay gravity drains, where straight line laser guided accuracy is required.
BUTT / ELECTROFUSION
To complement our directional drilling works, A.K.Trenchless operate a range of automatic & semi-automatic butt/electrofusion machines.
This methodology allows 6 / 12 metre lengths of MDPE and HPPE pipes, with diameters ranging from 63mm to in excess of 800mm to be joined together to form a continuous line.
Butt fusion is the method used to join polyethylene pipe ends together. The joining of pipes requires that the mating surfaces are square to each other and properly prepared. The surfaces are simultaneously heated and melted with a hot plate heater. The hot plate heater is then removed and the melted surfaces are pressed together and held under pressure. As the molten surfaces are pressed together, the melted ends fuse and once cooled they form a permanent joint which is as strong as or stronger than the pipe itself in both tensile and pressure properties.
Electrofusion is a method of joining MDPE, Hdpe & other plastic pipes with special fittings that have built in electric heating elements which are used to weld the joint together.
The pipes to be joined are cleaned, inserted into the electrofusion fitting and a voltage is applied for a fixed duration dependent on the size being used, the built in heater coil then melts the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe wall which weld together producing a very strong joint.
Pipe Bursting is quick, non-invasive and a cost effective solution to replace existing clay, ductile iron, steel, pitch fibre and asbestos cement pipework.
Pulled by a hydraulic bursting unit from 26 tonne to 150 tonne the pilot rod uses the old pipeline as a guide as it cuts and splits through the existing pipeline and replaces the pipe with the required, new pipeline.
There is no need for traditional open cut methods with Pipe Bursting therefore it will not cause disruption or damage to the environment.
The Pipe Bursting system is able to replace and install pipelines in a wide range of diameters and lengths.
